With its remarkable collection of folk and decorative arts, the Museum shows the diverse and complex nature of American traditions. The only museum of Americana outside the United States, it was founded to bring American history and cultures to the people of Britain and Europe.

Applique quilt workshop

Like Kaffe Fassett, you too can be inspired by the beautiful and skilled textiles from the American Museum collection.
Teacher and Kaffe Fassett studio maker Janet Haigh, will be running an applique workshop to share the basics of this technique using a fun and modern approach to placement and colour.

You will need to bring
– a fabric backing
– some small sharp scissors and a regular pair,
– a range of needles and pins
– embroidery threads – greens and flowery colours!
– a camera or smart phone for taking photos, can be useful but not vital.

and possess an intermediate level of sewing skill.

Ticket includes some fabric, a light lunch and entrance to the Kaffe Fassett’s Quilts in America exhibition

Independence Day celebration

American Eden: a talk by Victoria Johnson

June 29, 2019 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm Join Victoria Johnson, author and Associate Professor of Urban Policy and Planning, Hunter College, New York, as she discusses her new book, American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic. A finalist for the US National Book Award in Nonfiction, it is the story of the founder of the first botanical garden in America.

Books will be available for purchase on the day.

Behind the scenes: restoring the Mount Vernon Garden

June 1, 2019 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm To celebrate the National Garden Scheme and the New American Garden come and enjoy a talk from our Head Gardener Andrew Cannell, as he discusses the work behind taking the Mount Vernon Garden back to its original 18th century George Washington design. The talk also includes a discussion of the techniques and processes of British garden archaeology from an industry professional.

Ticket does not include entrance to the Museum or Gardens. You will need to purchase an admission ticket on the day.

All monies from garden only entry tickets will be given to the National Garden Scheme.

The great American Museum Quilting Bee; a celebration of quilting techniques

May 27, 2019 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Drop in to a traditional Quilting Bee with Quilters from Region 5 of the Quilters’ Guild. Learn about quilt construction and traditional and modern quilting techniques. Join the quilters as they share their experience of hand stitching, treadle, and electric sewing machines. See how patterns appear as blocks are sewn into a quilt top and then stretched onto a frame. Activities for all ages and experience levels are available to try. Suitable for families.
