 Outdoor Play and Learning Open Day for Current OPAL Schools and for those Schools interested in OPAL

·      Observe playtime at one of the best schools for play in the UK

·      Find out how the new OFSTED framework links to OPAL

·      Discover how to improve behaviour, activity, wellbeing and core skills through playtimes

·      Hear from the headteacher, staff and children how playtimes have been transformed for every child

·      Meet the author of ‘Creating Excellence in Primary School Playtimes’

The OPAL primary programme is a UK initiative which has transformed playtimes for over 100,000 children in the UK and Canada.

Senior leadership and teachers responsible for health, activity, behaviour and wellbeing should attend.

Timings for current OPAL Schools: 09.30am until 12.55pm    

Timings for Schools Interested in OPAL: 11.30am until 14.30pm




Open day starts for current OPAL schools - Tea/Coffee on arrival


Welcome and Introductions - Who is here and from which schools?


Exercise – Divide into groups/split up schools

Workshop format examining our playwork, reflective practises, managing risk, managing dirt and the changing seasons.


Arrival of invited guests and staff from interested schools who want to see an OPAL Platinum school in action. Briefing session.


Light lunch, followed at 12.20pm by Playtime Observation – OPAL Platinum school, opportunity to network and chat to host school staff.

OPAL updates from Michael Follett (OPAL Director), Talk by Joe Beament – Headteacher on OPAL content, Talk by Jenni Simmons – OPAL Lead on OPAL impact

About OPAL Open Days

The Open Day aims to bring schools existing OPAL schools from the Bath area together to share good practice, network and observe a Platinum OPAL school, and also to allow schools new to OPAL a chance to find out more about the programme and observe playtime at a school that has outstanding play opportunities.


All members of staff who support OPAL within their schools may attend from 9.30am: Head Teachers, OPAL Leads, T.A’s, Lunchtime Supervisors.

Delegates from schools interested in OPAL may attend from 11.30am.

Parking is usually possible on nearby streets.

 Please note there is no charge but booked no-shows will be charged at £10 per head
