About British Dragonfly Society

The British Dragonfly Society (BDS) was founded in 1983 by a small group of dragonfly enthusiasts and scientists. We have three main aims:

  • Carry out and support research on dragonflies
  • Conserve dragonflies
  • Engage the public with dragonflies and their wetland habitats.
We run a number of training and volunteer days throughout the year that we hope you will join in with! There are 10 Dragonfly Hotspots across Scotland, all of which are fantastic sites to visit to see dragonflies - find out more here:

Join the British Dragonfly Society at Hotspot Portmoak Moss near Kinross - Date TBC due to lots of rain!

We have had to re-schedule this date as the Moss is very wet & difficult to work on just now. It should take place in early March - date to be confirmed.

Help improve the habitat for dragonflies at this wonderful Dragonfly Hotspot.

The day will involve removing small trees from the moss to help raise the water table & make the moss a wetter place.

It will be muddy work so please wear wellies & warm clothes and bring waterproofs and sturdy gloves. All tools will be provided but please bring a packed lunch & a drink. We will provide hot drinks and biscuits. Meet in the small car park by the entrance to the Moss at 10.30am & please let us know if you can lift share. We plan to finish about 3.00pm.

Please book your place so we know how many tools to bring by e-mailing Daniele on
