Shobana Jeyasingh Dance | Staging Schiele

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance | Staging Schiele

Fresh from the success of 2018’s Contagion (one of the year’s top ten dance works for The Guardian and Evening Standard), Shobana Jeyasingh Dance returns to DanceEast with Staging Schiele. Inspired by the extraordinary work and life of Austrian artist Egon Schiele, famous for his unflinching nudes and searing self-portraits, the piece scrutinises the eternal conundrum of the male artist and the female model.

Four dancers inhabit Schiele’s highly-charged world of colour, masterful lines and unusual perspectives, a world that puts the human body on visceral display. Shobana Jeyasingh’s choreography matches the intensity of Schiele, engaging with his anxieties as well as his supreme self-confidence. Staging Schiele captures the artist’s self-conscious framing of himself and his work, throwing light on his brief meteoric rise to fame.

Shobana is joined by an exceptional creative team – composer Orlando Gough, designer and visual artist Ben Cullen Williams, lighting designer Adam Carree and with costume design by Cottweiler.

Shobana is a leading choreographer, she has helped transform dance into a mainstream art and we are eager to welcome her back to the Jerwood DanceHouse. If you were lucky enough to see Contagion here last year, you’ll remember how strikingly the choreography and visual art complemented each other. We have no doubt the sequel, Staging Schiele, will be no less impressive and encourage you to book your tickets for this premiere before they sell out!

Join the company for a post-show Q&A on Friday 18 October.

DanceEast is so much more than a dance class facilitator and theatre venue. Flick through these pages to find out more about our diverse programme of activities. Artists and professionals are at the heart of our organisation and we are committed to supporting them in various ways; Associate Artist Scheme, Rural Retreats, CPD workshops, Advance Levels Classes, Choreographic Development Fund and much more. DanceEast has been running a range of innovative community projects for over thirty years. We work with a range of partners on local, national and international projects and enjoy introducing people to dance for the first time as much as developing and refining skills in more experienced dancers. We have a great team of hard-working, enthusiastic and DanceEast-loving staff.
