Dorothy House Christmas Appeal

Help local families stay together this Christmas

The need for end oflife care is growing and Dorothy House is launching a special Christmas Appealto make it possible for more families to be together at home during their lovedone’s final days. Your support will help to make sure that no one is forced tospend Christmas in hospital, away from their family, especially when it may betheir last.

72% of people preferto die at home, surrounded by family and home comforts. Dorothy House makesthis possible with their team of nurses, carers and community services that arefree of charge to anyone in our community who has a life-limiting illness orneeds palliative care.

And post-pandemic,Dorothy House needs your support more than ever, especially at Christmas, whenmore patients want to be at home with those they love.

Margaret Merritt, whose husband Vic recently received Dorothy House care at home, shared how muchit meant to them:

“Dorothy House care makes it possible for families to be together at hometo the very end. My husband spent his final months and days in the comfort ofhis own home with his family around him. I can’t ever thank Dorothy Houseenough for that.”

You can support thisappeal by giving today. A gift of £42, for example, can help the Hospiceprovide two hours of support from an overnight carer in a patient’s home, allowing family members to rest in the knowledge that their loved one is insafe hands.

With shops full ofthrowaway gifts, Dorothy House is asking the local people of B&NES, Somerset and Wiltshire,to give the gift of dignity, independence and the comfort of home to those whoneed it most this Christmas.

Visit today to give one of the most meaningful gifts you’ll give this Christmas.

Dorothy House Hospice Care

Dorothy House Hospice Care is a leading, independent charity and in 2017 was awarded an ‘Outstanding’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), placing it in the top 6% of adult social care providers nationally. DHHC provides free, palliative and end of life care from early diagnosis and operates across 700 square miles, serving a population of 550,000 people. We are a key provider of services for Bath and North-East Somerset (BaNES), Wiltshire, and Somerset Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Specialists in complex palliative and end of life care, DHHC aims to pioneer its delivery of best practice care and support, tailored to the needs of patients with life-limiting illness, their families and carers.

The majority of our care is delivered in the home and the community including our Nurse Specialist teams working in partnership with GPs, a growing Hospice at Home Service and support through our Outreach Centres and 1,300-strong volunteer network. DHHC also provides inpatient care, pre-and post-bereavement support, rehabilitation programmes, complementary, creative therapies and more.

Our aim is to equip individuals and communities with the knowledge and skills to respond to life-limiting illnesses with dignity, compassion and - above all - humanity. Education and training are at the forefront of this work: We run programmes and events for health and social care professionals, and increasingly, the wider community around death and dying.

Providing our services requires significant funds and for every £1 from the NHS, we have to raise £4. We do this through our work in fundraising, our 28 shops and education programmes.
