Thrive & Grow Project at Poltimore House

The Thrive and Grow Project is a horticultural and community gardening project that encourages people to come together and develop a shared vegetable garden, take part in growing activities and learn about horticulture in a relaxed and stimulating environment. 

This project will take place at Poltimore House where we have the use of a large polytunnel and a number of raised beds.  Facilitating these sessions will horticultural therapist Zoe Colson-Spence, who has a wealth of experience in this area, she set up a community gardening project in Sussex called Roots to Growth before moving to Devon

Here are some of the activities that will be taking place over the next few months:

  • Developing a small vegetable garden

  • Working together in a shared vegetable bed

  • Learn how to grow various types of vegetables

  • Opportunity to work in small creative groups

  • Chance to work outside in the grounds Poltimore House

  • Work at you own pace over a number of weeks

What will be supplied on this project:

  • Return transport from Poltimore House to Exeter via the Poltimore Minibus

  • Gardening tools (not clothing or gloves)

  • Soil, compost if required

  • Tea, Coffee and biscuits

These sessions will be weekly, with the first one on Monday 3rd June and running throughout the year. We provide transport from the centre of Exeter, with collection/pick up at Palce Gate in Exeter at 10:30am. 

This project is open to anyone and no experience is required.  In addition, there are so many positive aspects to these horticultural session, these include: 

  • Experiencing physical exercise and gets you out in the fresh air

  • You can work at your own pace and get a sense of achievement from the results

  • Regular gardening can bring a new structure to your life

  • Working in a small, safe environment with like mined people 

  • Gardening had be found to help with mental health and wellbeing

  • Developing a garden is fun and allows you to express your creativity.

So come and join us and help to develop a shared community garden in the beautiful surroundings of Poltimore House.
