Monthly Meeting - Marriage, from ancient to modern

This month, Guildford & Woking Humanists welcomes speaker Dr John Nichols, who'll be talking to us about marriage in history and modern times.

The talk will cover the historical influence of religion on marriage, parenthood and fertility, and current ways of celebrating marriage including civil partnerships, registry office weddings and humanist ceremonies.

John graduated from Liverpool Medical School in 1967 and has spent 42 years as a Guildford GP. He has done research in numerous areas, from measles immunity to folic acid. Although John retired from general practice three years ago, he is still involved in research and is a visiting research fellow at the University of Surrey. He is a member of Guildford & Woking Humanists and has previously given an excellent talk to the group on the history of medicine.

Guildford & Woking Humanists

Do you think about what is right and wrong, based on reason and respect for others?

Do you find beauty, and joy in the one life we have, without the need for an afterlife?

Do you look to science instead of religion as the best way to discover and understand the world?

Do you believe people can use empathy and compassion to make the world a better place for everyone?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then why not come along to one of our events and meet a friendly group of humanists, atheists, agnostics, skeptics and free-thinkers. We hold monthly speaker events and/or discussions at the Guildford Institute (in the Assembly Room on the first floor unless otherwise stated) and regular social events - all are welcome! There's no entry charge or membership fee, but we do collect donations to cover the room hire and speaker expenses - a donation of £3 is suggested unless you're a student in which case it's free.
