Open Data essentials for Researchers: An introduction

Posted on behalf of Scholarly Communications Unit, Research Services

An introduction to Open Data

Major research funders and the University have policies requiring open access to research publications and the associated underlying data.  The general expectation is that outputs from publicly-funded research projects should be made openly available with as few restrictions as possible.   Researchers are expected to produce and manage research findings and data throughout the project with reuse in mind.

The aim of this session is to equip participants with the knowledge necessary to ensure scholarly publications and associated data can be made open access.  Attendees will gain an understanding of the mechanisms and benefits of acting open with research outputs, and will understand where to go to get help.

The session will explore the following areas:

  • Funder and UCLan policy on open sharing of data

  • How and when to make your research data open access

  • Good practice in managing research data

  • Data management plans
