Rethink Mental Illness Stockport Support Group

Rethink Mental Illness Stockport Support Group

Posted on behalf of Philip and Susan

We are a small informal group that currently meet on a monthly basis.  We meet on the third wednesday of every month from 6-7.30pm

We come together in a safe space to share our experiences of mental illness with others who have experience of poor mental health.

The group will have a mixture of activities from talks, hobbies, crafts, films and food.

We want the group to be  a safe place to relax unwind and chat about any concerns you have.  (or just relax and talk about anything but!)

You can also find out what is going on in Stockport around mental health.

We are an official Rethink Mental Illness support group so we have access to a wide variety of resources and information.

All our meetings and activities are FREE OF CHARGE.

If you have not been to our meeting before it would be really helpful if you could get in touch and let us know that you are coming.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

You can call or text us on  07843 849828 (Phone is checked every other day so please be patient)

or you can email us at

I have anxiety about attending a strange group can you help?

We get that it can send anxiety/stress levels soaring to attend somewhere new and meet strangers.

We are happy to talk or text with you so you can get to know us.  We can arrange to meet for a coffee before the meeting or most commonly you can come early to the meeting so you can chat on a 121 basis.

Can you pay my travel expenses?

Currently we have no funding to help with getting to us.  We are trying to get some funding and will update this if we are able to help with expenses

Is there a charge for the group?

Everything we do as a group will be fully funded.  We will never make a charge for anything we organise

Can I bring someone with me.

Of course.  The more the merrier!  We welcome anyone to the group that has experience of mental health illness.  Support workers, partners, carers are all welcome to come and participate.  The only restriction is you have to be over 18 years old and under 130!

Is the building accessible for physical disabilities?

The building is fully accessible.  Our meeting takes place on the first floor but we have a wheelchair accessible lift so it's not a problem.   We also have wheelchair accessible loos!

Can you help with filling in benefit forms?

We are unable to give help or advice with benefit forms at the meeting.  However on a monday between 10-4

you can come to a group run by volunteers who specialise at filling in PIP and ESA forms.  There is no charge for this service.  It is a drop in so if you can get there early as places fill up fast.

Do you offer any sort of Counselling?

The group is not able to offer any sort of counselling.   Everyone in the group will have had experience of mental ill health and hopefully you will find someone at the group that you can identify with.    We are not able to support anyone at the group that requires intensive support.

Do you do any campaigning

We started off as a Time to Change group and trying to change the attitudes and stigma often surrounding mental ill health is something we are passionate about.    We don't expect people to help us raise public awareness but if this is something you are interested in we can provide opportunities to take part.
